In an HVAC system, temperature and pressure are directly related.  Whenever there is an increase in pressure in the HVAC system, there is a corresponding increase in temperature.  If there is a pressure drop, there is a temperature drop.

The system has a compressor that pressurizes the coolant to move it through the system and heat the coolant.  This coolant passes through a condenser (a unit that usually sits outside your home) where the hot temperature is released into the atmosphere to help cool the refrigerant.  The coolant is then transferred to the evaporator coil.  This coil is located in the air handling unit (AHU), which is usually located inside your home.  Warm air from the house passes over the cold coil.  It cools the air and in most cases also dehumidifies it.  The hot coolant is then returned to the compressor and the cycle repeats over and over.

Instead of generating electricity, the solar panel in the iAIRE Solar HVAC generates heat. The panel is mounted on the condensing unit. A VFD is installed on the compressor. A solar HVAC unit uses the sun’s energy to produce heat for cooling. This process replaces some of the energy that the compressor would normally put into the system from the building’s electrical grid.

The condensing unit has sensors that detect pressure or temperature and provide feedback to the HVAC controls, indicating how the system is performing.  As the solar panel adds more heat to the system, the VFD slows the compressor down to allow the system to operate at its normal operating pressure. The slower the compressor runs, the less electricity it uses to run. The compressor is usually the element in the HVAC system that consumes the most energy. Often uses up to half the energy normally required to run an HVAC system.

Adding Solar Panels To An Existing System: What You Need To Know

IAIRE is the first manufacturer to add a solar panel, compressor VFD and control logic as a complete package to an HVAC unit. iAIRE Solar HVAC uses a unique solar film developed by NREL that is more efficient than the film used in standard solar panels. This film does not need direct sunlight to generate heat. It uses the entire spectrum of light produced by the sun to create heat. The panel produces the most power in direct sunlight, but even on cloudy days the solar panel will provide heat to the system as this film also works with ambient light. This is different from standard solar panels that need direct sunlight to operate. The solar panels are all installed for new equipment or field retrofits, saving real estate, and they are installed as a single package and do not require a remote solar panel.

IAIRE’s 5-ton solar panel is about the same physical size as a single solar panel typically installed on a house roof. A solar panel on a house provides about 1.34 amps when it’s sunny outside. The iAIRE solar panel does not produce electricity. This reduces the amount of electricity consumed by the compressor. On the same sunny day that a standard solar panel produces 1.34 amps, the iAIRE solar panel draws about 10 amps off the compressor. To get the same result, a homeowner would need to install 7+ solar panels on their roof. This is an incredible amount of extra energy that a solar panel of the same size provides.

Solar HVAC has significant ongoing savings compared to conventional HVAC equipment.
