We spent many, many hours discussing, dealing, discussing and learning what and what kind of vehicle we should get for the trucking life. First, we’ve found that the following questions are a good starting point for figuring out how to choose the best truck for your trucker’s life.
Van Life
The answer to this question is one of the most important questions when determining how to choose a trailer for your truck. Your budget will definitely influence your choice. You may be in love with the 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter with clearance, shock absorbers, bamboo roof and all kinds of internal wiring as well as solar power, if you can’t afford it, you don’t have it. Figure out how much money you have (or are willing to spend) on a truck and go from there. There are so many options these days, determining your budget can be the first step in narrowing down your options.
How To Prepare For Van Life?
In addition, a new truck can cost more than a used one. This means that if you have the experience needed to fix a used car, you can save a lot of money on buying a used car. We have two vintage cars, but we never go that route. Experiment! We overpaid for them and ended up throwing them both away.

Space requirements include seats, seat belts, sleeping space, food storage, gear storage, etc… all of which expand as more bodies are added to the ride. We traveled in a 1976 Toyota Chinook with a dog. For the past year it has been just the two of us. We’ve reduced the amount of space we need here (more on that here) and made sure that almost everything in the truck has at least two purposes.

At first I wrote “do you want to stand up”, but then I realized that almost everyone wants to. This is one of the main reasons why we outgrow our truck (pictured above). Most of the time, getting up is no problem, but when the weather turns bad, we cook. The coffee is out. But buying a car with a high roof can affect how much it costs. There are various options for truck height, but basically the higher you go, the higher it costs. This applies to both the cost of the truck and petrol driving. Some truck drivers are less accessible than others. We traveled for over a year without a shower or water. There are many different hacks to stay clean on the go, and you can save yourself money and valuable space if you run out of a bathroom.
Another question to ask yourself is whether you want a mattress that breaks, or whether you want electricity, running water or bedding. The answer to each of these questions will affect the space you need and thus the size of your car.
Van Life Looks Idyllic On Social Media. But For Couples, It Can Be Challenging
Another super important question to consider when trying to narrow down which machine to choose is whether you’re using a turnkey kit or building your own. The conversion kit takes a lot of time to install (which means you’re on your way faster), but can cost more than if you did it yourself. However, DIY construction requires the ability to work or learn. Building your own machine also requires time, tools and space.
There are many options when it comes to custom building, but if you want to keep costs low, check this option off your list. The moment you walk in, the costs start to skyrocket. We will post more about the interior of the different trucks and their options. For now, we’ll stick to the car itself.
Ah, the debate about this seems to go round and round. Especially in red. Personally, we are big fans of gas engines. Our main reason isn’t really fuel economy or torque (we don’t tow anything), but needless to say we can find a diesel mechanic if it breaks down.
