Amazon prides itself on being an accessible, easy-to-use online marketplace for everything you need — and that obviously includes small homes.

Tiny House Boosts Living Space With Motorized Deck And Spiral Staircase

Tiny houses have become more popular in the past few years, either because of the cost of living or because they encourage less living. Tiny houses allow you to own your own property, even if that house measures between 100 and 400 square feet.

But while building a functional residence may seem like a daunting task, Amazon has stepped in to bring the hot millennial trend to the masses by making these tiny homes easy to buy and easy to build. There are more than two dozen options on Amazon for DIY home kits, including 113-foot cabins for $5,350 and dog houses for $20,000.

Surprisingly, some Amazon listings claim that these tiny houses can be built in just two days with two people.

To get an idea of how buying a tiny house on Amazon works, check out the “escape cabin” sold on Amazon for almost $19,000:

This is one of the tiny houses available for sale on Amazon – a buildable “getaway cabin” kit.

The whole wooden house is advertised as a cabin and not a full residence, probably because the house is small with only bare materials and few features.

The cottage is “large enough to serve as a summer house, granny flat, home office or even just a retail building,” the description says.

The floor plan for the small house shows a little more about its specifications. The layout is simple: three rooms on the first floor covering 292 square feet and one large room upstairs.

The home also includes a covered deck outside, which is optional if you’re not feeling the outdoors.

To make the best use of the small property, and to facilitate the construction of the house, the materials are few. Without gas, it would be difficult to set up a kitchen. To compensate for the lack of light, every room in the cottage has at least one window for light.

To turn a cabin into a home, Allwood suggests adding utilities for electricity and internet, and insulation for cold temperatures.

The room is divided, on the other hand, by a ladder in the middle which leads to a small attic room above.

The ceiling area is where Allwood advertised the room would be. The smooth ceiling makes hitting your head quite possible – at its highest, the room is less than five feet high.

Allwood’s listing for the cottage shows that the house comes in three large packages when it is delivered to you. All the materials needed to build a small house are apparently in the package sent: boards and planks, roof boards and logs, glass panes, nails and screws, and door locks.

Allwood says that “minimum tools are essential.” For the interested buyer with less home building experience, the package comes with “easy to use” instructions that should be easy to follow.

However, it is likely that you will need outside expertise to build the cottage. There is a small building kit with floor tiles, but there are no materials to build a foundation that ensures that the house is safe and stable.

Adding a foundation of gravel or concrete can help a house have a stable foundation, especially if you’re trying to build a small house on grass (which can slide in the rain) or on uneven ground.

This particular home appliance costs $18,800 on Amazon. The list suggests that building the tent could take about two days with two people working.

But Amazon also sells other small houses of various sizes and shapes. On the cheaper side, a one-bedroom, 113-square-foot cabin costs $5,350.

Allwood also suggests not using this model as a cottage, but rather as a “home office, pool house, guest house, yoga studio, retail kiosk, or simply retreat in your backyard.”

On the more expensive side, Amazon is selling this Timberline cabin. For $34,900, this home is 354 square feet and more customizable, making it easy to change the home’s floor plan.

Amazon sells other buildable home appliances for $46,900 and $64,650. However, these homes are much larger than about 400 square feet as defined by a “small home.” The least expensive houses to build. $75 to $275 per square foot average and includes barn style homes, modular homes, mobile homes and cottages. The easiest way to build a house is to build a small house with prefabricated materials, efficient materials and basic finishes.

As home prices rise across the country, many prospective homeowners are looking for affordable ways to build their dream home. Choosing a budget-friendly home style and using cost-effective building materials and methods can help make new home ownership a reality.

The Complete Guide To Estimating Tiny House Costs

Building a single family home costs about $50 to $150 per square foot, depending on the level of finish. Pole barns, also known as post houses, are built using poles buried in the ground rather than a concrete foundation. This construction method saves significantly on foundation costs.

Pole barn kits cost $15 to $40 per square foot for the plans, materials and labor to assemble the outer shell structure alone. Some companies even offer a complete turnkey package that comes complete with interior finishes.

A barn condominium costs $65 to $160 per square foot and combines the functionality of an agricultural barn with the permanence of a home. Barndominiums use economical barn construction with simple roof lines, lots of windows for daylight, and living space that doesn’t require bulky interior walls.

Barndominium equipment costs $30 to $50 per square foot for shell and field assembly. Site preparation, poured foundation, materials and interior finishes are the remaining costs.

Why Are American Houses So Flimsy And Poorly Built?

Modular home construction costs $80 to $160 per square foot, depending on floor plan, number of bedrooms and customizations. The streamlined construction process involves box-shaped sections or “modules” built in a factory and transported to your property for assembly, significantly reducing on-site construction costs.

Modular homes offer a choice of prefabricated plans or completely customized homes to meet your desired design and size. They are built to the same standards as traditional buildings with the advantage of less exposure to weather conditions for better quality control and faster construction time.

An A-frame house costs $100 to $300 per square foot to build, depending on whether you buy a kit or build the house from scratch. A-frames are most popular for cabins, with high triangular top lines that look like the letter A.

A-frame cabins became popular in the 1950s and 60s as a way for families to build an affordable vacation home. The unique design minimizes the building’s footprint and materials needed while still providing ample living space across two floors.

How Do Tiny Houses Get Water: Essential Guide To Supply Systems

A shipping container home costs $150 to $350 per square foot for a factory-built prefab container home. Repurposed shipping containers provide an instant structural shell for building a low-cost home. Installation of fixtures, windows, insulation and finishes transforms a weatherproof metal box into a living space.

Shipping containers are typically 8′ wide by 8.5′ high and come in lengths of 10, 20 or 40 feet. Multiple boxes can be combined to increase storage space. Custom container designs by an architect or designer cost $250 to $400 per square foot to build but offer more flexible size, layout and finish options.

A tiny house is affordable to build, generally because of its compact size of less than 400 square feet. The average cost to build a tiny house is $150 to $250 per square foot for a prefabricated unit or $250 to $450 for a custom home.

While tiny houses are very affordable, they are not allowed in some areas. Tiny houses built on trailers can get around zoning laws and high land costs in many areas, but most cities don’t allow you to have a tiny house on wheels as a permanent residence.
