You may be sold on the benefits, but curious about the costs. A solar and storage system costs about $25,000 to $35,000, depending on battery size and other factors. It is easier and cheaper to install the panels and battery at the same time. But if you already have solar panels installed and want to add storage, here’s what you can do: The cost of a battery ranges from $12,000 to $22,000. Ask your solar installer if they can add a battery to your system. If you purchase a separate battery or solar energy storage system, you are eligible for federal tax credits. Connecting a Solar Battery Bank Step 1: Decide how to connect your batteries (series or parallel)
We have a 12 volt system, so we connect the five 12 volt 100 amp lithium batteries in parallel, which means you connect negative to negative and positive to positive.
Make sure you use the correct size cables to connect the batteries together and connect the battery bank to the inverter. We used 2AWG 1ft cables to connect the battery. For the connection between the inverter charger and the battery bank we used 3 feet 2/0 AWG cables.

We decided to put together a system containing two 100 amp Renogy iron phosphate batteries, powered by a pair of 100 watt 12 volt Renogy solar panels, a 2000 watt AC/pure sine wave inverter, with one of Renogy’s 50 amp DC chargers to power each Thing well and keep it charged. It’s a system that can easily power an off-grid home, an all-electric truck system, or even a large RV. The great thing about Renogy components is that they allow you to scale the system up or down as needed with minimal hassle. We designed this system to meet the needs of a wide range of applications.

As with any component-based system, we had to map the system, including the smallest details such as fuses, wire gauges, switches, current flows and charging inputs. These systems are usually installed in a car or home, but this makes it difficult to know how to connect the components in a complete system. To overcome this, we chose to install all components in a “system on a pallet” format, making it easier to show how they all work together.

The core of Renogy’s power systems are batteries. Renogy sent us two of their Bluetooth-connected 100Ah self-heating iron phosphate batteries. These are some of the most common batteries used in truck power systems in the United States and around the world. Lithium batteries are rapidly replacing AGM batteries and older lead-acid batteries due to their long life and high energy density.

These two batteries store energy generated by the car’s solar panels and the car’s on-board electrical system, and send it back through the inverter and DC circuits when it’s time to use the power. In our palletized system configuration, the batteries are located in the corner of the pallet, but are typically stored in the back of the trunk, under the seat, or at the bottom of a cabinet.
