The state has chosen who Gov. Gavin Newsom will build, promised 1,200 small houses for the homeless residents of the state. But it remains to be seen when they will be built.
Companies That Build Tiny Homes
Almost a year ago, Governor Gavin Newsom promised to introduce 1,200 tiny houses to protect the growing homeless population of the state. Now the state has chosen who will build those tiny houses and what they will look like – but there’s no word yet on when people will be able to move in.

In March, Newsom announced plans to deliver the tiny houses to Los Angeles, San Diego County, San Jose and Sacramento. The state has chosen six companies to create apartments:
The agreements signed at the end of October do not say how many small apartments or which small apartments the state will buy from each seller, nor how much the state will spend. Not even the sellers themselves know many details.
“It’s not clear to us today which product is going to which city or when,” said Pallet CEO Amy King. “We are on standby and ready to serve when called upon.”
California is home to more than 181,000 residents, according to the latest state estimates. Of these, more than 123,000 people live in camps, cars, abandoned buildings or other places not intended for habitation.
Tiny House Plans & Micro Home Plans
In recent years, California city leaders have supported tiny houses as a way to move people out of the state’s many homeless encampments. Cheaper and easier to build than traditional apartments, tiny apartments are intended as a temporary respite where homeless people can live while they wait for a permanent home.
Lava’s standard 70-square-foot tiny house — a basic cabin with no plumbing — costs $18,900. A 120 square foot en-suite unit is significantly more expensive at $48,500.

The state requires that each tiny house be at least 70 square feet for one person and 120 square feet for two people. They don’t have to have their own bathroom.

Now that the contracts have been awarded, other cities not included in this state program can use their own funds to buy tiny houses without the lengthy process of requesting bids from multiple suppliers.
Neither the governor’s office nor the state Department of Universal Services responded to questions about when the state-funded tiny houses will be installed or why the process has taken so long.
“Obviously it would be great if it could go faster, but we understand the complexity,” King said. “I am hopeful that now that we are living in 2024 and the agreements have been made, things will go a little faster.”
