Cost To Update Kitchen Cabinets
The best way to develop a kitchen remodeling budget is to first assess the type of remodeling your kitchen needs. There are three main types of kitchen remodels, including decorative remodels, pull-out kitchen remodels, and custom kitchen remodels. Read on to learn what each type of remodeling requires and to see the estimated timeline from construction to completion of permits and ordering.
Low Cost Kitchen Makeover
Exterior remodeling can include upgraded countertops, tile backsplash, kitchen appliances, cabinet hardware and new paint. The budget for a kitchen renovation typically ranges from $5,000 to $20,000 and lasts from 3 to 7 weeks.
A pull-out remodel requires the removal of an existing kitchen space and typically involves replacing cabinets/hardware, countertops, backsplash, flooring, lighting/electrical, and kitchen appliances. A typical pull-out kitchen remodel can cost between $15,000 and $60,000, depending on space conditions and product selections. On average, this kitchen remodel lasts 10 to 14 weeks.
If your kitchen has lost functionality and needs to be rebuilt, a custom kitchen remodel is the best option. This type of kitchen remodel focuses on redesigning the layout and moving walls. A custom kitchen remodel involves removing the existing kitchen and adjacent space and relocating the appliances, electrical, and plumbing.
Additionally, homeowners can choose to customize cabinets/hardware, countertops, backsplashes, flooring, and kitchen appliances. Custom kitchen remodels cost from $50,000 to $130,000 and last from 12 to 24 weeks.

When I was getting ready to start remodeling my kitchen, one thing I did a lot of research on and found very few was some cost examples of kitchen remodels. I get it, no one wants to talk about money.
Small Kitchen Remodel Costs And Planning Tips Explained
That’s why I wrote this article, after all, it really helps to know what the average cost of a kitchen remodel is and how much you can expect to spend when renovating your kitchen. Keep it handy and plan and budget accordingly. You can see my full kitchen before and after posting in my kitchen.
After watching countless shows on HGTV where I was convinced we could spend close to 20K renovating our kitchen, I remember my husband telling me I was crazy and he was right (obviously I wasn’t happy about it!!).
Well, we spent almost twice as much. Yes! Kitchen remodeling is no joke. Kitchen renovation costs an average of 20,000 to 40,000. So let’s take a look at where the money went on our latest DIY kitchen renovation.
Expect a large portion of your kitchen renovation budget to be spent on kitchen cabinets. This may be the most expensive item, but it’s also the most important.
How To Save Money On A Kitchen Remodel
Go to a few places to buy cabinets, find a manufacturer you like, and then see what other dealers in your area have. My cabinets are from Fabwood. They are a mid-range cabinet maker with very affordable prices. A friend of mine has been using them and recommended them. To see these shelves in action, check out my How to Organize Kitchen Drawers .
If I wanted it higher (think lower rack) it would have cost double! I went to 3 places to buy cabinets, asked them about prices and negotiated a lot. The initial estimate was around 20K, and I ended up paying 11K. 20K to 11K, not bad, right? ? !
My other suggestion is to localize and scale. I go to Lowe’s and Home Depot to get cost estimates just for fun. Guess how much the shelves alone cost? 30K, yes.
Again, the research pays off. If you are in NJ I have used Alpha Kitchen and they are great to work with and the prices are great.
How Much Do Kitchen Cabinets Cost?
Also, if you’re renovating your kitchen on a budget, consider IKEA or a place with ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets. An IKEA kitchen remodel costs much less than a traditional cabinet maker. If you’re willing to put in some hard work, you can save thousands of dollars!
Keep in mind that our kitchen appliances were the second largest item in our budget and we needed everything since we were missing most of the house we purchased. Clearly, there’s a device for every budget.
We chose Kitchen Aid which had the look we wanted but was still affordable. So we spent about $7,900 on a double oven, refrigerator, panel dishwasher, and stove.
Typically, kitchen countertops are sold per square foot, so the price depends on how much countertop you need and where you buy it.
