Before we get into the process of painting the cabinets, let’s talk about remodeling the cabinets. Cabinet refinishing is the process of replacing cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges and/or hardware while keeping the cabinet box (or frame) intact. There are three installation options to consider for your cabinet doors: partial overlap, full overlap, and inset. Partial Fit is when your cabinet doors only cover part of the frame. Full-cover cabinet doors cover the entire frame, while interior cabinet doors sit flush with the frame and have a more recessed aesthetic.

My old closet doors were partially finished. While this isn’t a bad look, I wanted my kitchen to look and feel more unique. So I decided to tackle the cabinets with new doors that would cover the entire frame. Here are the previous ones:

I came across a company called Nieu Cabinet Doors and I love that they make custom cabinet doors.

Wardrobe frame Nieu has 16 door styles to choose from. I knew I wanted to keep the modern shaker style, but wanted it to be unique, so I chose the Super Shaker style, which has a curved feature that lifts the kitchen. When I sent the new measurements it took about 4 weeks to receive the new doors. Now, keep in mind that if you want to keep the size of your closet doors and change the style, you absolutely can. There are three reasons why you might want to remodel your closets: 1. You want to go from a partial remodel to a full remodel. 2. You want to change the style of your closet doors. 3. You want to replace the cabinet door with a cabinet drawer. Nieu offers you the option of sending the doors raw, primed or painted. Yes, you read that right, you can skip this tutorial entirely and paint your new doors, but where’s the fun in that!? You will only be responsible for painting the cabinet boxes. This step is critical to cabinet painting success. Before removing the doors and drawer fronts, you should label each door with a number or letter, even if you are edging. This will be taken as the “gateway name”. Naming your doors/fronts will ensure that each door returns to its original position and you won’t have to guess if you’re ready to install it again. You’ll also want to have a drying area and label each area with the appropriate door name. I have also added the name of the door to the corresponding cabinet. I also saved the hinges and other hardware along with the cabinet box that was going to be reinstalled. Being organized is KEY!

Now that you know how to upgrade your drying rack and have it labeled and organized, it’s time to start removing cabinet doors, hinges, and other hardware like knobs and pulls. This process is easier and faster with a drill. Don’t forget to store your hinges and hardware with the right cabinet box to ensure a smooth reorganization. If you plan to use new hardware on the cabinet doors, fill those holes with wood filler. In my case, I’m using new hinges, so I filled in the old hinge holes in the cabinetry. In this step you should also use caulking to fill the seams of the doors or frames.

Whether you decide to upgrade your cabinets or not, you still need to clean your surfaces and clean them thoroughly! Our wardrobes take a beating from everyday use; there are layers of cooking grease, fingerprints, dust, and god knows what else! This is why the cleaning step is important. One might ask, “Why don’t we just skip to the sanding part?” This is because you don’t want to press oil or dirt into the grain of the wood. So first wash and rinse, then sand. First, I used Spray Nine along with a jet to degrease the frames and doors (if you’re reinstalling, you only need to degrease the cabinet boxes, not your new doors). Then, after cleaning the surface, I used the TSP solution with a microfiber cloth to wipe off the Spray Nine solution. You’ll want to repeat this step for all areas that will be painted, including the existing trim or molding.

Now that your surface is clean and degreased, it’s time to prepare the kitchen. I taped the inside of the cabinets, floors, counters, appliances, doors and windows. All areas around cabinets that will not be painted must be covered. You’ll be surprised where paint can go, so cover it up even if you think it’s unnecessary. I used painter’s paper on the floor, cabinet boxes and counters. Paper rolls come in a variety of widths, so choose the one that best fits your space. I used plastic for appliances, windows, doors/entrances. You are probably wondering why the blue and green bands are listed because they work differently. I used blue tape to block the paper to the ground and tape the plastic; The green band is to protect the extra block and create sharp lines. I added green tape to the lower leg of the cabinet because I didn’t want paint on the new floors. Green tape is used in any area that needs extra protection or sharp lines.

Sanding helps the paint adhere better to the cabinets. To scratch the cabinet frames, I started with a 120 grit sanding block. Then I used a dry/wet vacuum (you can use any vacuum) with a brush attachment to remove the dust from the sanding. Next, I cleaned the surface with denatured alcohol applied with a microfiber cloth.

If you have wood cabinets, you will need an oil-based primer. I recommend using a respirator or a regular mask with the windows open to protect against fumes. The smell fades after a few hours, but it’s quite strong, so use a mask. Because the oil-based print is very thick, measure the amount of primer you need into a separate plastic container and then thin the print by 20% using paint thinner. Use a velvet roller and brush to apply the primer. You want to do this section at once. Next you need to refine your roller/brush strokes. Take a fine bristle brush, I bought mine at a craft store and brush the area you just brushed. This will flatten the print and create a smooth surface when painting. If you don’t want to spend so much time rolling and brushing, you can also spray paint with a sprayer.

After the primer dries, use a 220 grit sanding block to smooth the paint lines. Break up the dust with a brush attachment and clean your frames and doors with denatured alcohol using a microfiber cloth. If necessary, you can apply another layer.
