How To Build A Raised Garden Bed With Pallets – In this post I will share how to make a raised garden bed with legs. Suitable for growing vegetables or flowers.
This year, one of the blessings of lockdown has been time to grow vegetables. This is my first year growing vegetables. And of course I learned a lot.
How To Build A Raised Garden Bed With Pallets
In May I planted carrot seeds, but it turned out that the container I planted was too small. I have a small garden. And I don’t want to build a large vegetable garden on the ground. So I decided to build a garden bed for carrots.
How To Build A Raised Bed For Your Garden
Like my other DIY projects, I’ve created a YouTube video sharing how to make a vegetable bed. I find it easier to follow videos than written posts. So I hope this video is useful for you. Press play on the video below to see how I made the vegetable planter.
I used engineered wood that I took from the builders yard at B&Q. I prefer the larger B&Q in the Liffey Valley, but you can get treated wood from most builders. I’m going to paint the vegetable path. But Ireland’s rainy weather has other ideas.
If you are painting a vegetable patch make sure to use a low VOC paint. This is because you don’t want toxins to get into your vegetables. I also line the inside of the vegetable bed with garden cloth to help prevent plant rot.

I work with getireland growing.ie To help people on their vegetable growing journey I have highlights saved to my story sharing my progress.
How are your vegetables growing this summer? I have successfully grown beans. There are several burgs planted. And I expected carrots. I learned that carrots don’t like being moved. But I’ve moved mine twice.
I hope they enjoy their new vegetable garden and plant it. I will keep you updated on their progress. There’s something therapeutic about growing your own food. I think next year I will plan my vegetable plate better. You may also plan to build raised beds in the ground.
However, I was surprised at how little space the plants needed to grow. and how well plants do in pots and containers. I also gave my nephew a green thumbs up.

If you had told me last year I would have made a DIY garden bed with my own two hands. I might laugh in your face.
I have a reputation as someone who really kills plants. “Black thumb” is too much of an adjective to describe me.

–If you can believe it. The tree is not dead! It’s not like we have much production….really. And strawberries are sour. Slugs eat kale And oregano-who?
Maybe….I can grow food that our family can enjoy. in April My readers and YouTube viewers have started the 30 Day Outdoor Remodel Makeover Challenge in April while the challenge is underway. It felt right for me to try making raised garden beds.
That one! (These raised garden planters are a little smaller than a standard 4×8. I made them 3×8 and they are only 12″ deep!)

And to think that hours of sweating and wheelbarrow riding will probably provide my family with delicious food this summer.
When I told a friend that I was building a raised garden bed, he asked, “Why build a raised garden bed? Just plant it in the ground!” Easier said than done. The earth here in Maryland is full of clay. It’s surprising what grows! If you live in an area where the soil is fertile Or if you know that you have the ability to improve your soil. Just plant it in the ground and it’s good! But if you’re like me with a yard full of clay Raised garden beds are also a great option. Build on top of the ground and fill it with nutrient-rich soil from the nursery. (They mix the soil with compost and sell it super cheap.) This means my chances of success increase 1000% haha Especially as a beginner who doesn’t know anything about gardening. I want the simplest option.
This materials list is for making two garden beds, so divide the beds in half if you want to make just one garden bed. Or calculate it if you want to reduce it.

Raised Garden Bed From Pallets
There are no cedar planks that are the “right” size to use as a garden bed. Since how you build this bed is up to you, I used 10 1″ x 6″ x 8′ boards and 4 smaller 1″ x 4″ x 6′ boards for the ends. Whatever suits you!
Want to know what types of plants to use as beds in the garden? I recommend cedar because it doesn’t rot. You should not use pressure treated wood because it contains chemicals that can leach into the soil. I also don’t have enough knowledge about using pallets. Because I heard that pallets can also use chemicals. Raised garden beds with rocks, tin, pavers, and rocks are also great options! I love the look of cedar trees. So I chose that.
We’re building a big box here. So the easiest solution for me was to use 8 foot 1″ x 6″ boards for the sides without cutting them. But I had to cut the short sides into 3 foot pieces. Most standard garden planters are 4×8, but I didn’t have the extra legs.
First, you need to think carefully about where you are going to place your garden bed. At my house, we have a large maple tree that provides a lot of sun protection. But fortunately, the side of the house near the fence gets full sunlight all day long. So make sure to place your garden bed where it will thrive.

And I don’t know about you. But I’m not very satisfied with making a square and it’s the same as a 90 degree square when I make a box. Especially on uneven lawns, haha.
So I used an old corner clamp. It belonged to Grandpa. I found it in his barn when he died. I always loved thinking about how proud he would be to see me using his old gear.
I have to say If you were a real carpenter you wouldn’t be backed into a corner like this. Attaching a board to the end of another board is not the right way to make it, but for me it worked for this project. Yet another option is to use corner braces or use a Kreg Pockethole Jig to securely join these boards together.
If you’ve never worked with cedar before, know this: Reduce any stress on the screws. And the boards will crack, they

So after gluing the wood together (you can use both interior and exterior wood glue if you prefer.) Then you need to drill pilot holes for the exterior screws. (where you see the red arrow) once you have drilled the pilot hole you can slowly remove the outer screw.
The outer screw will not rust. So make sure to use coated screws and say they are for external use!
I once read that whenever you are working on an outdoor project, Always use screws, not nails. Screws can hold together materials that may expand and contract due to environmental conditions.
I’m really not sure. How to build this fence? But I knew this bet was a good idea.

I placed 36 inch garden stakes around the inside edge of the raised garden bed. Using a hammer, drop it to the ground. I made sure all the stakes were about 32″ deep for stability. So the depth is 4″.
I then added a second layer of cedar that rests on the square base along with the wood.
