How To Build Log Cabin
Our example cabin in this instructable is 11′-8″ x 16′ using 7″ thick x 9″ tall logs. The spacing will be 2.5″. Yours may be other sizes. The plans are custom made for all dimensions listed.
Small Cabin Designs You Can Build Yourself
After determining the cabin dimensions, add 4 inches to each and use those numbers to cut the logs to length.
Lay the log on its side and draw a chalk line down the middle. The jig also has a center line marked on it with holes cut to make it easier to line up the template with the log.
The connector is attached to the INSIDE side of the log. (The face of the log that will be on the inside of the chamber. This is facing up in the photo)
Leave about 2 inches between the end of the log and the final seam allowance. Fasten it to the beam with 3 sheet metal screws.
How To Build A Log Cabin
Align the second template with the centerline of the log so that the vertical edge is 10′-8″.
Turn the log over and cut notches using the guide saw. After making two cuts per notch, remove the piece of wood and make another pass. This will make the saw cut very smooth for a good fit.
Place the foam support bar into the joints. Apply add-on. Spray wet and smooth with a small trowel or modified putty. A: I have no intention of copying anything, I am not imitating anyone. I like to do new things, different and original works. More about Joalek Henry ยป
In order to build a log house well or even for a small cabin, as the case discussed in this article, it is necessary to have a supply of good quality logs, or at least they are all about size and rights, and above all. the convenience that its diameter is not less than 15 cm. Such was the case with this construction, as the trees used were, for the most part, very crooked trunks, with diameters from ten to twenty-five centimeters. This necessitated a greater amount of work in setting up and preparing the logs, as they must necessarily be even on both sides, with no large gaps left between them to cover. Later, during assembly, I even thought that it was wrong to choose that type of construction without a trunk in sufficient quantity and quality. The difficulties were eventually overcome, but the cabin had to be smaller than originally expected.

The photo shows the final appearance of the cabin, and in the background are other interesting house works showing the future.
There were not many trees at his disposal, it was located in a difficult-to-reach area, which was covered with a membrane. Therefore, it was very difficult to extract and transport to the construction site. Because transportation is necessary for my motorcycle, which was actually an indispensable piece of equipment for my home projects.
The low cost of construction, which of course entailed doing all the work with one’s own hands, was the main object, and therefore no other trees or logs could be procured, but anyone thinking of making a similar construction would do well. take precautions to supply large logs in quantity and quality.
Most of the logs used are pine, but the cabin also has a mixture of chestnut eucalyptus and some karvala, the latter not very suitable for work due to the irregularity of the logs. I have learned from my experience that eucalyptus logs are the best for this type of work because they peel easily without going into the waste and are very easy to process into greenery and are compatible with eucalyptus trees and rights. In addition, eucalyptus is thin, very durable and can even refuse any type of maintenance product. I think the only drawback is that it cracks easily, but I think this can be partly avoided if the trees are cut at the right time and not left to dry in the sun.
Fleming Self Build Log Home
Having already gathered some logs, which I thought were enough to build a hut, I began to clear it. Pines are not easy to peel and there is always some scrap of skin stuck to the stem and then the brown spots that were. In my opinion, it is impossible to carry out the project without cleaning the logs, because the bark will serve as a shelter for wood parasites and prevent the application of protective measures that will inevitably shorten the rot.
My shower door will definitely hold up beyond the walls. What warrants it is that it is made of chestnut wood and covered with a small porch roof. Brown is the most durable wood there is, which cannot be said to be made of pine walls.
My country had a chestnut with a diameter of more than 30 cm at the base of the tree. Since they didn’t produce nuts or were of very poor quality, I thought they would be much more useful in board form. Since I needed the wood for the door and table, I decided to cut them down to make them into planks. It was the beginning of July, and it was not the best time to cut trees. At the sawmill they were told that the logs could no longer be cut because the wood would crack, and they would have to dry in the shade for several months.
With that in mind, I decided to take a risk and saw myself chestnut using a chainsaw. I have never done this kind of work and the first cut trunk boards were very irregular, but with practice I got better and ended up with 12 boards 4 cm thick. They were a bit thick but he was afraid they would crack and so I decided to soak them in tank water as he heard it would be good for the wood and dry quickly. The boards had been in water for two weeks and were all black with ink splattered from chestnuts, after they had been laid out to dry in a place where the sun did not come. It is true that the boards do not crack during drying, but when they are pulled to the door and are not yet completely dry. Anyway, this whole process was very fast, it didn’t take two months.

Due to the irregularity of the boards, I had to use a plane on the door and table to keep a reasonable presentation, but this unconventional sawing operation paid off.
The foundations and walls, on which the logs of the hut walls rest, were the first stage of construction, and at the same time the easiest to make. The foundations were left only about 30 cm deep and I think that was more than enough. They were filled with stone and concrete, and then they erected small walls 30 cm high and 20 cm wide, on which they began to place the logs. Of course, you can place the logs directly on the foundation, but this would not be a good idea, as they will come into direct contact with soil moisture and will rot faster. However, it is better to put thicker trunks at the bottom, because they will always be more exposed to rain.
Murete was also built of stone and concrete, without the use of iron, for reasons of economy, but also because I felt there would be no need for it.
In the interior of the dirt cabin, as well as on the small balcony, place pieces of tiles and bricks, and then the first layer of already leveled concrete, which will be the basis for the further completion of this work.
Log Cabin Building Set: 250 Pieces, Handmade
Installing Trunks was the most difficult and time-consuming step in the entire build. My intention was to apply mortar to the logs, placing them with the joints already closed, but I soon found that was impractical for various reasons, including the number of maneuvers involved in lifting the trunk. they could do with minimal adjustment because as i said unfortunately most of the logs were even quite crooked.
However, they managed to become the first logs of the cement layer, and the work started very well. I tried to choose the thickest and heaviest rods possible
