Q: My new home has been prepared for a ceiling fan that is finally getting ready to be installed. Are there any steps I should take?

A: You will be using a step, so I hope you have good balance. Plus, it’s easy to install.
How To Add A Remote Control To Your Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans range in price from $100 to several hundred dollars and take more than an hour to install. Most of this time is spent assembling the fans right out of the box.
Because your house is prefab, the builder had to build a beamed steel box between the ceilings to support the weight of the fan. If you’re replacing a light fixture with a ceiling fan, which is usually heavier, you’ll need to install a support panel to keep the fan from falling over.
After purchasing a fan, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. With some fans you attach the blades to the motor housing and then hang the finished fan (in which case it must be broken), with others you attach the motor to the ceiling first and then attach the blades.
Start by turning off the breaker at the main service panel, then make sure the wiring is de-energized.

All fans have a bracket that plugs into the electrical box in the ceiling. Make sure that this bracket, secured by two screws, is tight to the box and ceiling, or the fan will fall down during use. The bracket must have a hook or lock to support the weight of the fan when it is connected to the power supply.
There should be two switches on the wall for the fan. One controls the fan and the other controls the light kit. How the switches work depends on how you wire the fan.
Pull the wires out of the ceiling with the fan supported by the mounting bracket. You will see the white wire (neutral), the black and red wires (hot circuits), and the green or bare copper wire (ground).
Disconnect the wires from the fan. There will be a black thread, a green thread, a white thread, and a blue thread. Connect the green wire from the fan to the green or bare copper wire on the ceiling. Then connect the white wires and then the black wires.

Finally, connect the red circuit wire to the blue fan wire (this connection powers the light kit). Use wire nuts ($5 for a bag of 25) to make a tight connection.
Now you are ready to attach the fan to the ceiling. This can be tricky, as you may have to support the fan by pushing the housing into the mounting bracket with your other hand.
Finally, attach the light assembly to the bottom of the fan. Remove the small cover under the fan and pull out the plastic fitting connector with the wires that push the light kit to the pairing.
If your fan has separate wires instead of this installation, connect the separate wires from the fan to the wires on the light assembly. Again, match the colors of the threads.
How Much Does Ceiling Fan Installation Cost In 2024?
For homeowners who want to install a fan instead of a ceiling light, a bracket beam will be needed to support the weight of the fan. Unfortunately, there will only be one switch on the wall to control the power of the fan. In the past, if you wanted to operate the fan and light separately, you would have to use a fan pull circuit or pay for an additional wall switch.
Today, you can build a remote switch that runs on batteries for about $25. This device is hidden in the fan’s mounting bracket, and the switch can be wall-mounted or stored as a TV remote. It only takes a few minutes to connect and instructions are included.
Once the fan is wired and secured to the mounting bracket, turn the breaker back on and slide the wall switches.
If the fan is running low, the blades are out of balance. This can be fixed with a fan balancer kit (about $2), which includes a clip that attaches to the end of each blade. Turn off the fan after transferring the clip from one page to another.

Once you determine which blade makes the biggest difference in reducing sag, move the clamp along the length of the blade to determine where to place the constant weight. This weight is stuck to the top of the page and is invisible.

Installing a fan-approved electrical box takes some work, but ceiling fans are fairly simple to assemble and install.
As homeowners discover year-round energy savings, ceiling fans are growing in popularity. In summer, ceiling fans create a cool breeze, reducing air conditioning drafts. In winter, they circulate hot air to keep the room warm.
Installing a ceiling fan is fairly simple, especially if the space above is accessible from the ceiling. Regardless, the work is still good. Here we’ll show you how to replace an old light fixture with a new ceiling fan and light fixture in a room without a ceiling above. The advantage of this approach is that you don’t have to run new wires. The fan connects to the existing cable of the old lamp.
However, this is very important – you cannot hang the fan on an existing electrical box. Not strong enough to support the added weight and vibration of the fan. Assuming you can’t access the ceiling fan from above, you’ll need to use a bracket or box specifically rated to mount the fan between the joints, or better yet, a fan-rated “pancake” box (because it’s so thin) directly into the ceiling beam.

Use this formula to find the best size for a room’s square footage (the most crowded area): Square footage (in square feet) divided by 4 equals blade spacing (in inches). For rooms with low ceilings, the stair tread is slightly slanted and wider if the ceilings are high.
Another good rule of thumb is to remember that sheets less than 36 inches are best suited for spaces less than 75 square feet, such as bathrooms and breakfast rooms. The 36- to 42-inch range works in rooms up to 225 square feet, such as the dining room. Larger rooms and bedrooms can handle 50- to 54-inch sheets.
