Landscaping Backyard On A Budget – The young family living in this Houston Heights home bought a partial yard package to transform their yard. One big challenge: a tight budget of $8,000. (works for ALL budgets. See our Landscaping Cost Guide for budget details). Their goals for the yard: beautify the fence—it’s sturdy but needs freshening up, create a grill area, hide outdoor wiring, incorporate hardy, low-maintenance plants, and create a simple seating area on the side of the garden that gets the most shade. Our design team set out to create a beautiful and affordable backyard makeover.
The company’s talented team of designers are experts in design engineering, and this designer was creative with smart, affordable solutions to help this family achieve their goals. First, in order to create a simple living space, we created a path and a terrace made of concrete pavers. Planks are the most important expense of a shipyard. Discs: $5,120.

To add beauty and richness to the yard, our designer incorporated broom hydrangea, plantain and Kimberley ferns into the mix, all of which thrive on the partially shaded side of the yard. Hydrangeas were one of the homeowner’s top desires, but most varieties can’t handle the South Texas heat, so we chose a bulbous hydrangea that is hardy and low maintenance.

On the other side of the yard, where the sun shines, we added a simple braid and star jasmine vines that give the fence a fresh look and a nice scent.
To keep the cost of purchasing plants low, we recommend 1-gallon and 5-gallon plants. These are small at first, but quickly grow into the full, lush plants you see in the design. Plants: $1,120.
We added depth and dimension to the yard by adding a small pea gravel border around the edge. We extended the gravel border near the house to create a BBQ area and a small trough to hide the AC and electrical units. Gravel: $1,600.
One simple way to liven up a yard is to improve the appearance of the lawn. Organic Lawn Care: $80. (Looking for a lawn substitute? Check out our 2020 plants.)
