Very Narrow Living Room Ideas – I’m back with another DIY collection, Save Our Space. My plan for this series is to step into the reader’s shoes and (virtually) offer design tips and tricks on how to improve it.
I have to say that 90% of the submissions I receive from readers are related to living room layouts. It can be difficult to figure out how to maximize space in this frequently used room. Where are you going to put the TV? How many seats should there be? The current design dilemma comes from Hannah, who is facing this exact problem. Her living room is long and narrow and she needs new furniture. But what to take and where to put everything? Let’s see her presentation…
Very Narrow Living Room Ideas
I have a beautiful family room and I really don’t know how I want to arrange the furniture or what to put on my huge empty walls. For us, function is more important than form in this room, but now we’re ready to purchase new furniture and make the most of this space.
Ideas For Decorating A Long And Narrow Living Room Story
The real challenge I have is finding wall art that isn’t mass produced and tacky but is still large enough for solid walls. Another trick is to place some functional storage space for Internet and TV electronics on the right side of the fireplace.
I’ve been looking at this room for a long time, thinking about different options for the couch and seating in this space. I ended up thinking of two different options for Hannah and her family, depending on where she wanted the TV. (And since I know someone will ask, I use a free program from Floorplanner.com to do this.)
I know people have strong opinions about TV placement (just look at the strong feelings about what’s in our room), so I wanted to give Hannah two different options. Before we get into the living room layout, here are a few things I would do no matter which option she chooses.
Let’s start by placing the TV above the fireplace. Obviously, I’m a big fan of the Frame TV – we have several at home – and I love that this TV looks like a work of art above the fireplace. Of course! The family might want to watch TV in the kitchen, so I can see why leaving it above the fireplace has its benefits.

The living room was laid out as before, with a section in the middle of the room, the kitchen space and the rest of the house were closed off. I think it would be wise to open things up a bit, especially to avoid Hannah and her family staring at the back of the couch.
Here’s a floor plan of my friend and former blogging partner Bridget’s living room. Here you can explore her entire home. Her living room is also long and narrow, and she chose two sofas facing each other and a TV above the fireplace.
For sofas, make sure you choose two different ones! I always love the look of a leather sofa versus a fabric sofa. I also think it’s beautiful when they have different leg profiles, with one leg higher and the other closer to the ground.
Ideally, you want to leave about 16-18 inches of space between the sofas and the coffee table, so Hannah will need a smaller coffee table, around 29 inches or smaller. I really like the look of this oval unit, it’s a good size at 26 inches wide. I also love that Bridget has an extra chair in the back of the room that takes up some of that space. Hannah could definitely do something similar with the faux Eames chair.

Hannah also mentioned that she needed a solution to hide the cable box and TV cables above the fireplace. I found this tutorial that shows how to add a rear AV box behind your TV to house these components. It would be a good idea to keep things clean and tidy when positioning your Frame TV against the wall.
Okay, here is my second narrow living room layout idea. Move the TV above the console (where we will hide the TV components) on the right side wall. In front we placed a sofa, a coffee table and then two cozy armchairs. In this situation, I like to use swivel chairs so I can watch TV or turn around to see the play area or kitchen. This navy blue velvet chair is really beautiful!
We have a TV hanging from a long console in the living room and it’s a great place to store toys for the kids. Hannah could hang a long piece on the wall with a Frame TV hanging above it.
After rearranging the TV, you can start decorating the fireplace. In this blog post, you’ll learn my best tips for decorating your fireplace. I love the idea of a big mirror (like the one in our old apartment) or a clock and frames like my mom’s.

Once Hannah decides on her layout, I would add some storage on the wall to the left as you enter the room. She mentioned that her daughter loves to play here and that they needed a place to hide some toys. I would choose a storage area directly in front of the windows. She could top it off with a lamp and perhaps a large mirror to reflect the light from the window.
Both layouts still leave a little space for play between the kitchen and the couch, so easy access to toys is ideal for the whole family!
Now let’s move on to Hannah’s last pressing question. “Why the hell should I hang the walls?” Here are some ideas for you…
In my brother’s living room, he and his wife have a large piece of art hanging above the sectional. It fits perfectly in the space, taking up about 2/3 of the space above the sofa. They bought it in Horchow, you can find a lot of good things there.

Hannah could also try abstract art, like I did in Ellis’ nursery. I have no artistic talent and this turned out really well, so I think she can do it! You can find large (and generic) art pieces at HomeGoods or Target and repurpose the canvas.
Juniper Print Shop also sells large items that you can personalize. Before you buy, read my blog post about choosing art at the right scale.
A photo frame is also a fun idea if you want to display a variety of frames and be able to change them out regularly. Here’s a guide to creating one.

How To Style A Narrow Living Room
In this blog post, I’ll share some strategies for arranging furniture in a long, narrow living room and design tips to help you create a comfortable, inviting space for you and your family.
Assessing your living room space is an important first step in arranging furniture in a long room. While there’s no need to completely empty the room, you do need to know what you’re working with. It all starts with taking measurements.
It’s important to take accurate measurements to determine what will fit in your narrow living room. Start by measuring the length of the longest wall and the width
