At the same time I received a comment asking if I had hired an electrician to install the new ceiling light. No, we did it ourselves. While replacing a ceiling light can seem a little intimidating, DIY is easy once you get over the fear of electrocution. Let’s take a closer look!

When installing a light fixture, the most important step is to triple check that the power is off. No one should be dropped. When we replace a light fixture, not only do we turn on the switch on the main service panel, but we also turn off the physical light switch. This may sound crazy, but we have old appliances in our house that can be a bit wonky at times.
How To Install A Light Fixture
Now comes the fun part – getting rid of the old ones! Let’s take out that old fashioned ceiling light. Every light fixture is different, but look for the screws on the globe, or if it’s a lampshade, there should be some sort of release mechanism. After removing the old light fixture, you will also need to remove the ceiling light base from the junction box. Once you remove the fixture from the ceiling, you should see the wires. Don’t touch those yet!
Since our first priority is not to crash, take a voltage tester to make sure the power is off. Yes, I know you turned the ignition on and the physical light switch is in the off position, but guess what? I did the same thing in the restaurant and those wires were still live. Before you start disconnecting wires, use a voltage tester on all wires to confirm that they are not connected properly. Don’t be scared. Just be smart.
After testing the wires, unscrew the wire connector nuts from the old ceiling light. A standard socket box for a light fixture should have three wires. If your home has newer electrical equipment, the wires should be black (hot), white (neutral) and green or copper (ground). But if you are like me and use Curto wire, the shots are terrible. Curto was the previous owner of our home, so be extra careful if your wiring is anything like mine…when our house hurts us, we call it “Curto’d”. Once you’ve disconnected the wires, you’ll also need to remove the old mounting plate.
If you haven’t unpacked your new ceiling light yet, now is the time. If it’s a glass ball or a delicate lampshade, sometimes I’ll put it on a cloth on the floor. This is just me being extra careful not to damage, drop or scratch my new light. After removing the mounting base from the box, look at the wires. Again, you might find three and hopefully they are color coded correctly, unlike mine.

Locate the new mounting plate before running the wires from the new clamp base to the junction box. All new ceiling light fixtures should come with their own light fixture, and if your new light fixture is heavy duty, it may come with an extra center bolt.
There are several different ways to wire. In both cases, I use wire strips to remove less than an inch of the wire jacket. If using a screw connection, bend the wire into a U shape and wrap it around the screw before tightening.
The black or red wire connects to the gold screw. The white wire will connect to the silver screw and the green or copper wire will connect to the green screw. Without screws, you will need to connect wires to wires by twisting matching wire colors together. Do not leave bare wires exposed – cover the twisted connections with wire connectors. If additional coverage is needed, use electrical tape.
When replacing a ceiling light, do not confuse the neutral and live wires. Doing so may cause a short circuit, electric shock, or even cause a fire.

Once you’ve rewired the new light and attached the fixture base to the ceiling, it’s time to add the bulb (with the appropriate wattage, of course) and attach the globe or shade to the base. Turn the breaker back on and turn on the lights! you did it! You replaced the overhead light yourself!
