So book your tour today and start your journey to living big in a small space. Recently I have been involved in a little project… By little I mean LITTLE. literally a tiny house. The design vision for this tiny house. Rustic luxury. I wanted it to be earthy enough to feel comfortable in the hills of Sun Valley, but groomed and polished enough to feel right at home.
I was brought to this project by Mr. Dave Holland, a gifted and talented program teacher at a local school. The idea behind this initiative was to help students learn about the world around them while building with their own hands. The idea was developed as a way to help them engage in higher level thinking and problem solving.
While Mr. Holland and the students did all the work, my role was to choose the finish and stage the little nest to make it look great to potential buyers. While decorating a space under 200 square feet would normally be relatively simple, this was a bit more interesting from a tiny house perspective. Yes, it’s a small square, but I still designed a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Fun!!! Not only did I choose the finishes and fixtures, but I also worked with Mr. Holland (with the help of his students, of course) to make the best use of the space. We had to be smart with the squares we had. This little girl has beauty and brains.
The design aesthetic I was going for was rustic-chic. Sophisticated neutrals were a natural fit. We chose grays with warm undertones for cabinets, window treatments, and more. Silver and antique bronze accents add style to this functional eye-catcher.

Before I entered the scene, the outside work was going well. Mr. Holland chose a rough, lightweight material.
As for the interior, it needs to be polished. Many tiny houses are bare bones and sometimes old and dark. We wanted it to be light and airy. We chose white walls and stunning oak ceilings finished with an oak stain.
I chose two long benches to sit on and Mr. Holland turned them into sofas. This space-saving option also provided additional storage…KAPOW! One idea was to build a folding desk on the opposite wall. I purchased two sturdy end tables that could double as seating if the buyer wanted this upgrade. These cheeky little shockers were also empty on the inside and could be used for extra creative storage.
To add warmth and texture, I chose to use a cowhide sheet purchased from Tandy Leather (above). For lightweight cladding, aluminum subway tile fits the bill (below). It is made of aluminum on the outside with luxury elements on the interior.
