Over the past few years, I’ve given many examples of how to make your own DIY fire pit, but now that we have more space, I’m going to share the steps to make a fire pit surrounded by a real fire pit!
Diy Backyard Landscaping Ideas On A Budget
We didn’t end up making a fire pit that year. But we fell in love with the ultimate smokeless fire pit: the Solo stove. We put it in our yard and we had just gotten out of our camping chairs when we wanted to start a fire.
Above Ground Pool Ideas On A Budget: Transform Your Backyard Without Breaking The Bank
We’ve had a Yukon-sized solo stove for a few years and love how we don’t smell like smoke after a night of making s’mores over the fire! (They have a special technique in the construction to limit the smoke from the fire.)
When we moved into this home, we gave up the large backyard for a small, wooded backyard. While we had a small, flat green space, we tried to cram all our old toys into a very small space. The trampoline was a major eyesore, but it was very effective during the shutdown. So, fair trade.
We got a dog, and since we spend a lot of time outdoors, we didn’t just want him to be cute, we wanted him to work better for our family. With the arrival of the new puppy, it was easy to talk our girls into ditching the trampoline. Yes!
For years we have said that once the trampoline is gone, we will tear up the park and make the lawn nicer and nicer.

But as soon as we got the trampoline we realized it gave us the perfect spot for a fire pit!! We were already using our Solo stove in the backyard, so why not make a real fire pit for our family to enjoy?
Rather than soak up that empty space left for a trampoline, we decided it would be the perfect spot for a fire pit!
Here’s how we created the perfect s’more spot in our backyard. This is such an easy DIY project that has so much family fun value!
Choose a spot in your yard that is flat, level, and away from buildings or trees. Make sure it is large enough to accommodate the size of the fireplace and the living space.

Mark the area by placing a pole in the center, tie a rope half the distance of your circle to the pole. Then tie the string to the spray paint can. Spray paint the circle around your circumference to create a perfect circle.
If you have grass or weeds in the area, you will need to remove them by cutting the soil or using a helicopter. This will help grass grow in your fire pit area.
We didn’t have to do much of this since we had a head in our backyard on a trampoline. But we killed grass at the edge.
You want to make sure your place is in good condition or it will be difficult to enjoy sitting by the fire.
Landscaping Ideas Around Your Deck
We didn’t change our location even though it’s not completely level because we don’t want to mess up the drainage width in our yard. But it is good enough for us and we tested it before proceeding with the work.
Add a protective barrier between the ground and the fire area by installing landscape fabric. Use small landscaping stakes to secure the landscaping material to the ground.
Follow all fire pit construction instructions, including if you need to place rocks or sand on the floor under or inside the fire pit. Please follow all safety requirements.
You will need some sort of raised frame around the outer edge of the fire pit ring. This will keep your pea gravel inside. We used these cobblestones to make the frames and used structural glue from a caulking gun to hold them together.
Landscaping Ideas For Privacy
We bought a ton of pea gravel at the local garden center and cycled around the fireplace. About 3 inches deep.
I love the look of the pea stone and how well it ties in with our fence and brick house.
You can use a variety of chairs, but I prefer an Adirondack chair. If you’re on a tight budget, you can make a class or two. We have added 4 Adirondack chairs, but will be adding at least 2 more soon!
We also added string lights above the space and they add so much to the ambiance at night! Just be careful not to put it directly in the fire.

We absolutely LOVE how the place turned out. We stay there while we spend time with the dog. Having another place to hang out and chat outside has been great! We say it feels like we’ve got another room in our house.
It will be so much fun to use this fall and winter! Not to mention, it’s fun to host friends around the fire and cook s’mores any time of year.
