Red Sofa Living Room Decor

Red Sofa Living Room Decor – After having the same living room furniture since 2012, Mr Blakes decided it was time for a change. For the past few years, Mr Blakes has been looking for a new chaise lounge sofa. But not just any sofa – a red sofa. I thought, what in the world am I going to do with a big red sofa. For months, the living room seemed empty next to that couch because I couldn’t figure out how to work around the red couch.

Then I decided to pull everything out of the space, and start from scratch. Once the room was finished I could really start to see how to style the living room decor and work around this red sofa. I hesitate to say this is a finished look – but for now I think it’s pretty complete.

Now that the space is gone (for the most part), I can share more about how we got here and what I’ve learned. Here are 3 ways I was able to work around this red couch to style the space that you can apply when styling your own space.

How To Decorate Your Large Living Room

As with personal styling, you can totally treat a neutral red piece. So I tried the red couch as a neutral and created a color scheme that had nothing to do with the red couch. I decided to focus on the second focal color – the teal/blue color you see in the artwork. This set of artwork comes from Target and features the focus color, but subtly introduces other colors I can play with like gray. I also wanted a mustard gold color as another accent color because I’ve often seen these two colors mixed together and love the look. It has nothing to do with the sofa being red, because I consider it a neutral.

This is another principle of personal style that applies to home decor. I found pillows that not only had a print but also had texture even though they were plain. I felt this worked best because it added interest but not the visual clutter that print can give. We don’t really like anything to match, so the only two cushions in the armchairs have the same print. I also love how each piece of art has a different print, but they don’t match – it just “goes” together. Instead of choosing pieces with more patterns, I used more textures, which came with the gray fur and pillows. Even the “Life is Beautiful” pillow is extravagant and the other side of the pillow is glittery so it adds lots of sparkle and texture.

Now let’s move on to these cushion covers from Reflection Designs. I received these cushion covers from Reflection Design for free to use in my living room makeover to share here on the blog. Cushion covers are a great way to change the look of a room without getting all new cushions. These sophisticated Ankara/African print wax cushion covers were a way to add an African touch to our previous decor and artwork in a more modern way. They have many prints to choose from so I sent pictures of the ones I already had and they recommended this print. The black, white and gold print was perfectly tied in with cushions on the couch that also featured these colors. But by placing them on the chairs, the prints do not collide at all.

I mentioned earlier that I freed up space before starting this process. But that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of every piece you had before. Before giving something back, ask yourself this question: Does it make me happy? Does this style fit with my personal decorating style? Does it fit with the decor style of the room? If not, let it go or move it somewhere else. If so, return it to space.

Many things we had before we decided to redecorate are still in the living room, but some things are not. We kept the cushions that came with the red sofa, but just turned them over so the patterned side wasn’t visible – just the solid red. We’ve never really liked the pattern, so it works perfectly.

We also put lights, candles and candles, planters and fur pieces. We had a small table by the door that worked for storage but didn’t fit in the room, and we moved it to another room where it would work better.

We also kept the cushions we previously had in the armchairs and just covered them with the Reflection Design cushion cover because the print on the original cushions didn’t fit the decor style of the space.

I absolutely love how this space comes together! Mr. Blakes didn’t say anything or ask any questions, which meant he liked it. I’m not sure if it’s completely finished yet or if I’ll add more. If I do, I will share it with you all.
